Franklin TAIQI (TAICHI)

T’ai Chi Ch’ uan (also transliterated as “Taijiquan”), is a “soft” fighting style belonging to the “Internal Family” (Nei Jia), along with such martial arts as Pa Kua Chang (Baguazhang), and Hsing-I Ch’ uan (Xing-Yi). T’ai Chi enhances the much more exertive, “external” (Wai Jia), martial arts, like Kenpo Karate and Muay Thai. Translated, T’ai Chi Ch’ uan implies “Ultimate Boxing” or “ Endless Fist,” and can be traced back to the ancient Taoist “Chang, San-Feng,” though the technique may have existed for thousands of years before that time in a more basic form and under a different name.

No matter when or specifically by whom it was begun, Franklin TaiChi seems directly linked to and rooted in Taoist principles of Yin and Yang.

Franklin AIKIJUTSU (AIKIDO)

The name of our style (RYU) is Icho and has a extremely unique significance. The Patch we wear on our gi is a layout of 3 ginkgo leaves. “Icho” is Japanese for ginkgo. The 3 leaf design is Sensei Lau’s family crest. The 3 leaves stands for mind, body, and spirit. The Icho Ryu oath reads:

  • Train your mind
  • Establish your body
  • Polish your spirit

As you practice the Franklin Aikijutsu you should continuously try to establish these 3 standards.

It was called Escrima and was practiced largely for self-defense by the pre-Spanish Filipinos. These individuals were noted for their friendly nature and legendary hospitality.

The older Filipinos, who made stick fighting an art, preferred to hit bone and liked a stick to a blade. The stick left shattered bone instead of a clean cut. The hitting end of the stick can travel many times the speed of the empty hand. It really feels nothing, whether it hits bone or flesh.

Tien Shan Pai is a northern style which originated in the Tien Shan mountains of northwestern China. It is well known in Taiwan as an efficient combating style. At the same time, it also consists of graceful empty-hand and weapons forms stressing rhythm and “ing shou” – the demonstration of power accentuated by strong thuds made by the hands.

Franklin Kungfu self-defense is defined by strikes from the side combined with multiple blocks, to ensure that if one block falls short, the second can cover. Maneuvering is considered important to countering attacks; Tien Shan Pai concentrates on low, steady steps sideways, in addition to swift “hidden” steps to mislead the enemy. Aside from Tien Shan Pai Kungfu, GM Taningco also teaching other 7 Martial Arts in Franklin and its nearby areas.
